I am writing about something totally different today.  Anyone who volunteers knows how humbling and therapeutic it can be to watch the results of your efforts unfold in front of you.  Since 2007, I have been a volunteer on the executive committee team of the Motorcycle Ride For Dad (Durham & Greater Toronto East) Chapter.  We host an annual event to raise money for the fight against prostate cancer. Where the money is raised the money stays.

Saturday, June 10, 2017 was a gorgeous sunny day for our Telus Motorcycle Ride For Dad (Durham & GTE Chapter) fundraiser for prostate cancer prevention and treatment. Over 200 motorcycle enthusiasts participated in the poker run through the countryside. Our poker stop hosts were the Scugog Community Recreation Centre, Classy Chassis & Cycles, Banjo’s Grill and Rhino’s Roadhouse.

A huge shout out to the riders, champions and volunteers that brought in pledges which will be granted to scientific research projects in prostate cancer; and 30% of it will be used for awareness and education programs.

Once again, we donated a portion of last year’s (2016) pledges to Dr Ananth Ravi and his research team of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Another research project that we have committed 10% of our pledges (2015-2020) raised are the clinical trials of an innovative treatment called SABR (Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy).

Our fundraising efforts in 2017 added over $40,000.00 to our fight against prostate cancer in the Durham.

I am taking this opportunity to share some nutritional tips to help in the prevention of prostate cancer.

First there are three risk factors that I wish to share.

  • 1) family history of prostate cancer; father and/or grandfather
  • 2) Diet high in red meat and high fat dairy products
  • 3) Obesity
