The saying goes ,”You are What You Eat”. That statement is so true!  We need to nourish our brain along with our body.

Which items should you add to your grocery cart; if you want to sharpen mental alertness and help sustain a steady supply of blood to the body’s central command centre?

I will introduce other brain food in additional posts; but today I will list 5 of the 2023 Top Brain Food claimed by nutritional experts.

Green Leafy Vegetables

Consume a green salad and another vegetable daily to enhance your brain power.  Vegetables that are the best for brain health are kale, spinach, broccoli, and collards. There is a carotenoid, lutein in spinach and kale, for example, that prevents cognitive decline.

Berries

Berries for the BrainBerries are rich in polyphenols which help to clear toxic proteins in the brain.  Blueberries and strawberries are the 2023 top brain food berries. A berry rich diet activates the brain’s natural house-cleaning process. Blueberries play a role in how nerve cells in the brain communicate. Berries fight inflammation, protect from oxidation and support a better quality of life.

Curcumin

Curcumin found in turmeric which is used in curry is another top brain food..  It calms the inflammation and it has been discovered to generate new brain cells.  This blows a hole in the belief that, “You can’t train an old dog new tricks”. Curcumin promotes antioxidative and DNA protective effects.

Fish

Fatty fish is one of the foods with the most evidence that it promotes the enhancement of cognition and memory in people. Salmon, herring, sardines and trout are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids. DHA which is an omega-3 fatty acid found in oily fish makes its way to the brain. Mixed nuts nourish your brain because of their manganese and copper content. Walnuts have a high concentration of DHA which is a type of omega-3 fatty acid. Pistachio nuts help to reduce brain inflammation. Brazil nuts are a super selenium source.  Be sure to add nuts to your diet.
